UK CLINICAL GENETICS SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The UK Clinical Genetics Society (CGS) International Scholarship is to be awarded annually for up to two clinical geneticists from outside the UK. The purpose of the Scholarship is to develop or foster links between the visiting scholars (and their departments) and a UK Centre for the mutual benefit of both. Those awarded the scholarship will attend and give either a spoken or poster presentation at either the Spring Conference of the UK Clinical Genetics Society (which will be held on March 15th 16th in Newcastle) or the British Society of Human Genetics Conference in the autumn. This will be combined with a visit to one or more Clinical Genetic Centres during an additional week’s stay in the UK. The scholarship is specifically aimed at clinical geneticists from developing countries or those countries with developing genetic services. Clinical geneticists who work in isolated situations are particularly encouraged to apply.

The scholarship will include registration for the CGS or BSHG conference, accommodation over the period of the conference and a maximum award of £1000 to cover travel and local accommodation. The award winners will be expected to arrange such local accommodation though it is anticipated that the visiting centre will be able to advise on suitable venues. Nearly all UK centres will be willing to host the successful candidate. Visits longer than one week may be considered but would have to be agreed with the visiting centre and would still have a maximum support of £1000 from the CGS, and should clearly identify the aims above as the primary reason for the scholarship.

The presentation that the successful applicants are invited to give may include:

1.      Description of the genetics service(s) in their centre and country;

2.      Local research;

3.      Novel clinical observations or an audit.

Applicants must complete the application form and submit an abstract outlining their presentation and submit them with a curriculum vitae electronically to Dina Kotecha at the CGS office (bshg@bshg.org.uk).

Applicants should also provide the name and address of a referee.

The applications will be reviewed by the nominations committee of the CGS, which will select the successful candidate.

Applications for the 2012 award are now closed.
